Every year, SAE International conducts an aero competition to help give students the chance of experiencing a real-life engineering challenge. Union’s Aero club will send a Micro-class team to participate in the SAE Design East Aero competition. Freshmen and sophomores over this academic year have worked together to learn the ins and outs of RC aircraft design, construction, and flight. During this past term, the team has been dedicated to designing and prototyping various designs for the plane. Through planning and effort, the team has designed a plane that is the culmination of the skills and efforts of each team member’s unique specialization. The team this year has focused on strategic material choices, new design elements to improve strength and stability, and efficient assembly. The micro team will have a final plane built at the beginning of spring term, which will then be taken to Florida for the SAE Design East Competition.
