Gestures are known to increase communication and create a link between individuals. Creating a robot that can use gestures in a lifelike way will allow the robot to better communicate. The goal of this project is to design and construct a robotic hand to replicate commonly used hand gestures such as “high five”, and “thumbs up”. The hand movements of a human subject are recorded by a motion capture system and used to control the tendon driven robotic hand in real time. This project is a robust platform to conduct further hand gesture research in social robotics, the study of how humans and robots interact.
