Memoirs have been written concerning the immigration of Caribbean people to Western lands. These memoirs illustrate how Caribbeans have a unique history of enslavement and colonization that has an impact on their migration journeys and their longing for home. "Exile According to Julia" by Gisele Pineau and "Brother, I’m Dying" by Edwidge Danticat demonstrate the positive and negative views immigrants can have simultaneously about their previous homelands and their new homes. This research paper argues that Caribbeans immigrating to Western nations have similar views on their homelands and their new nations. They tend to feel nostalgia for what they have left behind, but also relief for having left. In their new nations, they see the opportunities available to them, but also understand the challenges that come with assimilation.
