Neurofeedback therapy has existed for several decades now with ongoing research evaluating its effectiveness as a successful treatment against certain disorders. Neurofeedback involves training the self-regulation of one’s neurocognitive state as measured by electroencephalography (EEG). EEG measures electrical activity of underlying neural tissue using electrodes placed on the surface of the scalp. Neurofeedback ties the recording of this electrical activity to a sensory feedback signal for display to the participant, allowing the participant to dynamically adjust their own EEG activity. Over time, people may learn to more easily achieve a desired neurocognitive state. Neurofeedback is still an emerging and expensive therapy and is not accessible enough to most for the benefits to be worth paying for. The AVIAN software, designed for this project, aims to address this issue by providing an open-source framework for potential applications in neurofeedback. The result of this project is a graphical user interface which has the potential to accommodate EEG data from over 26 consumer available biosensing devices using an open-source API (brainflow) for developing with biosensors, while also allowing for both visual and audio feedback in real time which react to metrics relating to concentration, relaxation, and band power ratios relating to neurofeedback. Future updates to this software will include the ability to check the impedance values for electrodes, as well as the option to use additional metrics.
