In my thesis I will first explore the symptoms, epidemiology, and prognosis of Major Depressive Disorder. I will focus on symptoms that are both included in the DSM-5 for an MDD diagnosis and ones that are commonly reported by patients. Specifically, I will look into anhedonia and loss of energy as well as common cognitive distortions that patients with MDD have reported. I will then examine various motivational techniques and therapy modalities that may be useful in treatment. I will assess which aspects of the techniques may be beneficial for patients with MDD according to common experiences of patients. I will then formulate my own guide of how to address patients who experience anhedonia and other cognitive symptoms that act as barriers to treatment.
