Transformers are an essential component to the distribution of electricity throughout the world. These systems can experience failure for various reasons, possibly resulting in power outages causing inconvenient and dangerous situations for people. Additionally, these malfunctions can be costly to repair or replace. In this project, acoustical and electromagnetic signatures of several transformers were measured and analyzed in order to search for a diagnostic technique that may be used to predict aging of the transformer. Total harmonic distortion and crest factor will be compared for several transformers operating under different conditions. Support from Dr. Michael Treanor is gratefully acknowledged.
