Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese anime that was produced in 1996 and scored by composer Yoko Kanno. Her work draws from a diverse array of inspirations, and is lauded as one of the premiere soundtracks in the history of animation. My project is designed as an interpretation and study of select pieces from the soundtrack. It is centered around six pieces of varying character, and aims to replicate them with a mixture of authenticity and creativity. Each piece is transcribed by ear, arranged for an ensemble of saxophones, and recorded into an Ableton Live session. These recordings are then mixed and mastered, to be presented alongside a discussion of the research process. If possible, select pieces will be performed either during this presentation or by the Jazz Ensemble later in the evening.
