The goal of this project was to design and manufacture a solar powered lawn mower. The initial idea was to make it fully autonomous but RC control allowed for better testing and a wider range of options when it comes to cutting pattern. The body was made out of 8020 t-slotted profiles and formed into a 16"x14" square to provide a solid base for the rest of the design. Two DC motors provided independent control of the front wheels with caster wheels attached to the rear for tighter turning. The 22”x22” in solar panel was attached to the chassis and wired to a charge controller, which supplied power to the battery, drive motors and cutter. Testing revealed that the solar panel, under good conditions, has an output of 47 watts and that the system consumed approximately 39 watts, suggesting that long running times without recharging are feasible.
