A power system’s modal properties can be approximated through the creation of a probing signal designed to specifically excite the natural frequencies of the grid. The technique is used to study the dynamics of the grid and to understand how the grid will react under various conditions. This paper provides an overview of an instructional module designed to model this process of low level signal probing onto a drum kit. The fundamental concept behind this module will be applying electromechanical mode analysis algorithms in an alternative way, and will illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques to estimate system dynamics. This module will present power systems education in a new light, and make it more accessible and understandable to students.
