The significance of a label from the perspective of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Many individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis are of average to above average intelligence. There continues to be controversy over whether these individuals benefit from receiving a diagnostic label. Much of the research exploring views on the diagnostic process and the autism label is disproportionally focused on the perspectives of parents and clinicians rather than the individuals being labeled. An increasing number of individuals with ASD are attending college, entering the workforce, and forming lasting relationships. Therefore, it is important to understand how they are impacted by their diagnostic label and whether disclosing their diagnosis will be beneficial or detrimental in various contexts. The present study aims to provide insight into how individuals with ASD view the autism label and the impact of disclosing their diagnosis to others. Participants will have completed an online survey containing multiple choice and open-ended questions regarding their views on their diagnostic label and on disclosing their diagnosis.
