Birdsong, with its musical qualities, has been fascinating humans for centuries. David Rothenberg is a musician and philosopher who has provided an alternative answer to the question of why birds sing. He believes that in addition to the ecological reasons of mating and protecting their territory, birds sing because they enjoy it. He suggests that birds may have their own concept of music. Rothenberg frequently performs with birds and improvises duets with them in a demonstration of his philosophy. There are many ornithologists that disagree with his claims, whereas others have done research that may corroborate them. In my talk I will summarize the various opinions and give mine. I will also play some short video clips of Rothenberg’s performances with birds.
