This thesis examines a holistic treatment approach for children’s communication disorders, especially a stutter. A holistic therapy approach serves as a means of addressing the patient as a multifaceted individual, paying attention to their mental, physical, and emotional well-being, instead of solely focussing on the communication disorder. Prior studies have found that there are significant mental and emotional effects of having a communication disorder but that the environment in which therapy can take place is impactful in terms of the treatment that can be administered, and the receptibility of the patient in that environment. The two licensed Speech Language Pathologist’s (SLP) who were interviewed believe empathy is at the core of their field; that a holistic approach is necessary; and that communication is the essence of human connection. Through this thesis, one can further learn how the environment in which an SLP practices is impactful in their implementation of services. Additionally, this thesis establishes the importance and necessity of trusting relationships between the patient, the parents of the patient, and the speech therapist. This thesis further establishes the importance of communication, not only as a means of being able to effectively converse with others, but even more so as a further means of connecting with others. Further research should be conducted on alternative forms of holistic therapy, such as Hippotherapy, and the potential of the application of holistic therapy approaches within the greater medical institutions in our society.
