In this essay, I reflect on how growing up in a Mexican household in New York City has shaped my identity. I start with my family's impact as I witnessed my parents' sacrifices before I fully understood them. Over time, I came to recognize their hard work and dedication as the foundation for the vast opportunities I have today. My mom taught me confidence and self love, and caring for my younger brother influenced my sense of responsibility and compassion. I also reflect on being criticized for being too emotional and how I have learned to view my empathy as a strength rather than a weakness. However, throughout all of these experiences, dance has remained a constant form of self expression for me. Ultimately, this essay explores my journey of learning to define myself through my experiences, my culture, and my values rather than through other people's perceptions.
