Digitization and the information and communications technology (ICT) revolution have transformed business organization and with it, technological innovation. Richard Baldwin (2016) argues that the ICT revolution constitutes a “Second Great Unbundling.” In the 19thcentury, the steam revolution (steamships and railroads) introduced the “First Great Unbundling” since it allowed production and consumption to be separated, such that production agglomerated and grew in scale and complexity in some regions (like automobiles in Detroit), while consumption occurred anywhere through the creation of national (and international) markets. These new forms of large scale production became more complex and required close communications between production units – challenges which geographic closeness helped to make better. This project will explore the transactions and interactions perpetrated between competing companies in an integral and rising industry.
