As a 2024 Klemm Fellow, I worked in the emergency room of a Cambodian hospital located in the capital city for three weeks to better understand the country’s public healthcare system. Along the way, I made friends with local residents and international tourists alike, networked with doctors and medical students, and became accustomed to the Cambodian lifestyle that differs drastically from the life I have in the US. I documented specific experiences that have provided insight into the healthcare system’s treatment of patients and staff in a public hospital, members of the rural community, and volunteers like myself. This presentation will cover my personal and professional experiences in Cambodia through well-documented case studies about the people and culture of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
