My Steinmetz presentation will focus on the Geneva Accords and why they need to be revised and rewritten. The presentation will focus on four different areas as to why the Geneva Accords need to be reexamined, and a few ways that the Accords can be fixed so as to be more sensible in today's world, with today's enemies. The first reason I will discuss for the revision of the Geneva Accords is the fact that they are extremely vague, which makes it difficult to determine what a rule means and make military decisions based on the rules. The second reason focuses on civilian protection, and how protecting civilians today is very different from when the rules were originally written. The third reason is that there are nations not bound to the Accords, which makes for difficult situations. The fourth reason is that there are "civilians warriors," who can cause problems in dealing with combatants because they might be civilians. Finally, I will talk about possible solutions. The main solution would be a rule that prohibits breaking rules unless the other side breaks the rule first, in which case the rule can be disregarded. Other solutions include rewriting certain rules and eliminating others as unworkable in today's military climate.
