The Student Conference of US Affairs (SCUSA) is an annual event held at West Point Academy in West Point, New York. The purpose of this conference is to expose political science students to the United States legislation process through a simulated activity of writing legislation about a given topic. The theme of SCUSA 2021 was about technology and future US influence, though students were divided into groups with their own relevant topic. Students were asked to create a proposal for a government group or committee, with the added focus of relating the overarching theme to their topic. These discussions took place over several days and were overseen by experts relevant to the topics. By the end of the weekend, each group presented their proposal to the entire conference. Beyond the knowledge and experience gained from this activity, SCUSA provided an excellent opportunity for networking among students, cadets, and experts. Students came together from all over the country, and internationally, to participate in the conference. As previously mentioned, there were a number of experts present, who were eager to get to know students and offer support in the future. One of the most meaningful aspects of the conference was the relationship-building between cadets and civilian students. SCUSA allowed each group to develop an understanding of each other and build relationships where there previously wouldn’t have been. The knowledge gained and the relationships developed during the conference give participants a deeper understanding of the field they are planning to pursue, as well as connections to utilize within the field.
