Another World is Possible: Democratic Innovations in Latin America

My presentation, based on my Senior Thesis, aims to revisit major political Latin American innovations to democratic life by identifying and acknowledging original programs and policies and examining how this contributes to the repertoire of democratic ideas and institutions worldwide. In this presentation, individual sections will be devoted to different innovations, which are defined as institutions, policies, and practices. The innovations that will be focused on are participatory budgets, gender identity laws, constitutional Earth rights, and conditional cash transfer programs as other related social programs targeted towards eliminating the transmission of poverty and social exclusion. Each section will work to advance and describe the origins of these innovations and explore how they connect to democracy and how they have gained transnational significance.
