French, being spoken by 220 million people, holds the status of official language in 29 countries. However, in many of these 29 countries, other languages and regional uses inflect local practices. We explore several of these local particularities from across the globe, looking in particular at how knowledge of this global language as well as accents in these countries cause speakers to be perceived. We will look at certain moments in particular evolutions of the French language and its role in these countries over the course of a few centuries up to modern day.
