Do Events Increase Crime? An Examination of Events and Crime at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC

Capital One Arena is the primary home to the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and Georgetown Men's Basketball team. Up to 20,000 people attend each of the hockey and basketball games, concerts, and other large events at the arena. Since this arena attracts tens of thousands of spectators, how does having an event impact crime in the surrounding area and the rest of the city? This paper and poster presentation examine the impact of events at the arena on crime, comparing different types of events, types of crime, and day of the week.
