What does it take to bring a world to life onstage in just a few weeks? How do the limitations of time and space affect creative decisions? How does one balance the responsibility of being both a college student and a theatrical designer? Our team of student designers and dramaturg faced these questions and more throughout the Union College Theater Department's Winter Studio production of Witch by Jen Silverman. Jen Silverman's Witch, a re-imagined retelling of the Jacobean play The Witch of Edmonton tackles the modern issues of gender, sexuality, and social exclusion, while posing the question: In a world without hope, what is a soul truly worth? Witch was an ambitious choice, pushing the limits for design and technical scale in the shorter production time of the Winter Studio series. This presentation focuses on the work of multiple sophomore student designers, including lighting, props, and scenic, and a student dramaturg, whose skill and passion brought this socially significant piece to life.
