I compare four strategies for generating real (inflation indexed) retirement income. I consider a hypothetical 55-year old male who needs $1,000 per month in inflation-adjusted income beginning at age 65 and continuing until age 90. I examine building a Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) ladder, single premium immediate annuity (SPIA), deferred income annuity (DIA), and fixed indexed annuity (FIA) with guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefits (GLWB). Each approach is evaluated in terms of cost, inflation protection, flexibility, and overall risk. The poster combines insights from academic research with practical financial planning considerations.
