Spartan Money: Did it work?

In order to reduce inequality, an 8th-century BC king of Sparta is said to have banned all currencies except heavy iron bars. But did this money work, and, if so, what could have driven the Spartans to use it? What does this Spartan example teach us about the administrative costs that more generally drive monetization?
