My presentation explores the associated diagnoses, surgical methods, anesthetics, essential instruments, postoperative procedures, and academic influences surrounding the ancient (neurosurgical) practice of trepanning. The works of Hippocrates and Galen are especially useful in this regard. While the majority of my presentation will be set in the ancient context, I will also include some comparisons with modern approaches to the practice based on interviews with neurosurgeons at Albany Med.
