Haiti’s story is interestingly complex because of its history. Colonization has played an imperative role in the development of the country. Particularly within the political and economic spheres. Haiti has a rich culture and a plethora of influences from the continent of Africa, predominantly, Benin, which is where voodoo originated. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and this impacts its healthcare. After analyzing Cholera, the Zika Virus and AIDS epidemic in Haiti, and conducting a comparative study between modern medicine, biomedicine in the United States, and alternative medicine, cultural medicine in Haiti, anthropological conclusions were drawn. Culture affects medicine everywhere. My presentation focuses on not only Haiti’s’ history, the role of colonization, its culture but how the political and economic systems within and outside the country affect its healthcare. I focus on Cholera, the Zika Virus, and AIDS. What are the powerful entities that affect Haiti? What are the different approaches to healthcare within and outside of Haiti? How can one learn from the past to improve the future of Haiti and the world?
