This presentation is about the ongoing work I am doing in proposing an artwork or exhibition to go with the Chinese Stone Lion once it is placed back on campus. I will go over the history of the Chinese Stone Lion, both as a cultural artifact and as an object of tradition at Union College, and discuss what it means to honor an object that has gone through so much trauma. My talk will touch on other art pieces THAT LIKE THE CHINESE STONE LION HAVE BEEN DEEMED "orphaned objects" and how we might be able to integrate the ideas of other artists and historians into making an exhibit for the Chinese Stone Lion. MOREOVER, BECAUSE UNION'S STONE LION IS MISSING HER COMPANION MALE LION SCULPTURE--CHINESE LIONS ARE USUALLY PRESENTED AS PAIRS-- I will discuss CASE STUDIES OF artworks that deal with negative space as a way to represent the absence of an object as well as works that contemplate the loss and grief of physical objects. To conclude my presentation, I plan on sharing with the community the ideas I have gathered for a potential exhibition and speak about how I have worked with the Chinese community on campus to refine and solidify these ideas.
