Last December, I spent three weeks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, working in the maternity department of Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. I worked closely with midwives, observed antenatal care and childbirth, and facilitated postnatal care for mothers and newborns. Witnessing life being brought into the world was incredible, but outside the hospital, I was confronted with a stark contrast. Visiting historical sites and watching films about the Cambodian Genocide, I learned about the mass killings of mothers and children in the same city that I now saw new life beginning. Through it all, I was amazed by the resilience of the midwives and the strength of the people I met. This presentation will share my experiences at the hospital, the friendships I formed, and the cultural and historical perspectives I gained.
