In order to transmit power over long distances from the generation plants to the user, the power is sent over wires at high voltages. A transformer is used to control the voltage of the power: raising it for transmission and lowering it for distribution and for safe usage in our homes. Thus, transformers are arguably one of the most important assets in the electrical power industry. It is vital to keep transformers in good condition to maximize their life span, minimize outages, and minimize replacement costs. Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) is one way to monitor the health of a transformer. In this talk I will present an introduction to transformer technology, discuss the methods for implementing DGA, and the effectiveness of each method. I will conclude by using DGA to analyze data obtained from in-service transformers while completing my internship at the New York Power Authority.
