On the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, Central America, healthcare is selectively available to people of higher socioeconomic statuses. When I volunteered in San Pedro, Belize for three weeks as a recipient of the Klemm Fellowship, I immediately noticed the lack of accessibility to healthcare that impacted the community. During this brief time, my host family, Spanish teacher, neighbors, and friends all encountered problems receiving basic healthcare. Through health-focused projects like building a greenhouse out of recycled materials to promote nutrition and implementing public healthcare clinics for underprivileged communities, I contributed to a recent social push for overall healthcare improvement in Belize.
