When I traveled to Argentina for the 2022 winter mini-term, I wanted to know what were the similarities and differences in Jewish life there compared to the Jewish community I know in the United States. But what I learned, in the end, was not what I was originally looking for. While on the trip, I observed ‘Jewishness’ in both Jewish and non-Jewish Argentines, ingrained in Argentinian culture. I recognized core values of being Jewish in parts of the everyday life of an Argentinian: kindness (doing Mitzvahs), charity (Tzedakah), social justice (Tikkun olam). From classroom guest lecturers, staying with a Jewish homestay family, and going on independent excursions, I formed my understanding of the experience from my unique perspective as a Jewish-American woman. This narrative is my personal story.
