Crafting a unique guitar tone often requires experimentation with pedal order, equalization, and signal routing. Guitarists frequently combine multiple effects pedals, such as distortion, delay, reverb, and modulation, to shape their sound. However, the order in which these pedals are connected can dramatically affect the resulting tone. Traditional pedalboards require musicians to physically rearrange cables whenever they want to test a new signal path, making the process time-consuming and discouraging creative exploration during rehearsals or live performances. To address this limitation, we developed a programmable pedalboard mixer designed to simplify tone design and allow guitarists to experiment more freely. The system uses digitally controlled multiplexers to reconfigure the signal path between pedals. Instead of manually unplugging and reconnecting cables, users can change the order of connected effects electronically with the press of a few buttons, enabling seamless exploration of different tonal combinations. In addition to flexible signal routing, the system incorporates analog signal conditioning and mixing stages that provide further control over the guitar's tone. Adjustable equalization and gain controls allow users to shape the frequency balance and signal level of the processed audio, while wet/dry mixing enables blending between the original signal sent to a pedal and the effected signal returned from it. This allows musicians to dial in subtle textures or more pronounced effects without sacrificing clarity or response, refining how strongly each effect contributes to the final sound. To support live and rehearsal use, the system also includes preset storage functionality. Users can save customized pedal orderings, mixing levels, and tone settings as presets that can be recalled instantly, allowing quick switching between configurations for different songs or musical sections. Loop reordering and preset selection are controlled through footswitch inputs connected to a microcontroller-based interface with a simple display, enabling hands-free operation while playing. The programmable pedalboard mixer makes pedal setups more flexible, streamlines tone design, and provides musicians with a practical tool for managing complex effects chains.
