Yerba Mate, a caffeinated beverage made from smoking the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis holly plant, is the national drink of Argentina. Through observation and conversations with Materos, I present a first-hand account of the cultural value of the drink. I also analyze the cultural gains and losses that have come from the introduction of mate into the US market.
