My research concerns heroic cults in ancient Greece. I begin by defining what constitutes a hero cult and then focus on two case studies: Achilles and Theseus. By relying on a diachronic and diatopic analysis, I explore the genesis of these cults from various perspectives-historical, social, and religious. I conclude by assessing how ancient Greek heroic cults eventually functioned as models for early Christian sainthood.
